Back to School, Back to Business

Making the Transition from Summer Easy and Painless

Labor Day weekend has just passed and that inevitable, anxiety ridden feeling of Fall has come to stay awhile. Is it just me? The holiday weekend is always chock full of final summer travel plans, long sun-filled beach days, outdoor picnics with friends or family; one last long-weekend hurrah before…… BAM.

Tuesday morning rolls around and it’s time to go back to school, back to the office, and the grind. Goodbye summer!

With this heartbreaking change of seasons in mind, we’ve created a list of seven tips to help you prepare for a smooth transition into fall so that snap back to reality doesn’t hit so hard after the grand finale to your summer.

1. Update your calendar + keep it organized

Whether it’s for personal, family, or work, create a calendar system that works for you. Color-code, sync, and align with your team members, family, partner, and anyone else who might need to be on the same page as you. Set up calendar prompts for your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks so your projects stay on track. Doing this will enable you to fit more into your schedule, become more productive overall, and keep you from missing out on anything important - like making time to prepare for that important meeting or so you don’t forget about the kids’ soccer game next Saturday.

2. Set up goals to keep you focused

It’s easy to create unrealistic or unachievable goals for yourself and then feel guilty or ashamed for not reaching them. Setting reasonable goals over time can help you stay focused, build healthy habits, boost your confidence, and increase overall productivity! Who knew putting something so small into practice could really change the whole trajectory of your life?

3. Refresh your office space

To master your productivity and focus at work, begin with cleaning off your desk space. Toss any papers, receipts, or bills you don’t need (or find a home for those items that you need to hang on to in a filing cabinet or drawer). A cluttered desk means a cluttered mind and fractured focus, so help yourself out! Clear out your computer desktop too - keeping your computer/ files organized will help you find what you need quickly and also allow you to focus on the task at hand! There are so many benefits of decluttering your space - and some of them are unexpected...

If you already have a clutter-free office, redecorate instead! Freshening up your space with new decor can re-energize you and give you some motivation to get work done!

4. Color-coding

Whether it’s back-to-school supplies for your kiddos, organizing work files, or just trying to keep your life under control, color coding can be a life-saver! Use different colored supplies for each child or dedicate a color to a specific client or personal task. This will help keep your calendar (and life!) streamlined and easy to follow.

5. Create a routine

Regardless of whether it’s just you or if you’ve got little ones to manage, setting up consistency and a routine can help keep life under control. Incorporating a healthy breakfast in the morning, differentiating work and leisure time, and dedicating some time to wind down are all essential! If you need to put it into your calendar at first to make sure you’re hitting all your routine goals, go for it! Once you have the routine down pat, you’re set up for success.

6. Set aside time to decompress

Making time to decompress and ground yourself is NOT something to be overlooked! Finding time to get quiet, read a book, meditate, or just to take some deep breaths and disconnect can help you manage a new season/chapter of your life, a difficult challenge, or just general overwhelm and anxiety. None of us are immune to these stressors. One overlooked form of self-care? Organizing! Head over to our recent blog to find out more!

7. Have something to look forward to

To avoid falling into monotonous routines, burnout, or endless cycles of day-to-day life management, get something on your calendar that you can look forward to. Having an event, a trip, or even simple plans to get together with good friends is proven to stimulate motivation and productivity, and improve your overall mental health!

There are many factors surrounding the end of summer that can easily slip you into a depression - shorter days, cooler temperatures, and fewer “fun” activities and time off. But this time of year is also a new chapter and an opportunity to start fresh! Using these seven ideas can help you create consistency, organization, and structure to help you tackle the end-of-summer transition to Fall like a pro!
