Organizing: An Overlooked & Unexpected Self Care Practice

How can organizing be considered self care?

We know that’s what you’re thinking right now... You’re thinking “there’s no way being organized can be as helpful as a massage, therapy, a good workout routine or yoga”. But we beg to differ! Here at Swoon Spaces, we think that organizing is one of the best (and overlooked!) forms of self care. For us, organizing isn’t just about aesthetic results and gorgeous Instagram photos (although we do love those!). We believe that organizing is a unique form of self care that can benefit you mentally, physically, and emotionally - just as much as many of the other self care activities we typically use to take care of ourselves.

Let us break it down for you…

Why is ORGANIZING an INVESTMENT in SELF CARE?

Not unlike a massage, therapy, supplements, and healthy foods, organizing is an INVESTMENT. Similar to those services, you must invest your money, energy, and time to reap the benefits of organizing. Investing in organic foods, gym memberships, spa treatments and new clothes help you live a better, healthier lifestyle that reflects the person you want to be. Getting yourself organized is the same!

What are some BENEFITS of ORGANIZING that are similar to SELF CARE?

Typical self care actions lead you to feel relaxed, at peace, in control, grounded, clear-headed and energized. Organizing can help you feel those very same things. Having all of your belongings put away (and easy to find) will help your space, mind, and spirit feel less cluttered. Knowing where all of your items are will allow you to stay focused on the things that matter and help you live more efficiently. You won’t be worrying about where your favorite sweater is, you can just grab it and get going! You will feel peaceful and empowered instead of chaotic and overwhelmed. Sounds similar to how you might feel after a great facial or yoga class? We thought so…

Think of ORGANIZING like you would a DETOX

If you’ve ever done a cleanse, you know how fantastic you can feel afterwards, even if the process itself doesn’t always feel the best. A home organizing process can feel pretty similar. A detox for your body clears out any toxins to enable your body to function more efficiently in the same way that organizing and decluttering can for your physical and mental space. You remove all the cobwebs, baggage and excess from your life to feel re-energized and experience a truly holistic reset. A detox oils the machine, provides serenity, and restores peace and calm to your daily life the same way a good organization session can!

In a fast-paced, highstakes world with constant stressors, self care is a vital practice that can take many different forms. Whether you meditate, exercise, or organize, all of these and many more activities and choices are a concerted effort to take care of oneself from the inside out. Swoon Spaces believes that organizing is an often overlooked form of self care and that everyone should include it as part of their lives. Self care is all about helping us feel good physically, improving our mental and emotional health, keeping us productive and efficient, and allowing us to reset and recharge in this chaotic and stressful world. Organizing is a great path to empowering ourselves to thrive every single day!
