Swoon Spaces: The Seasonal Swap

Recent temperatures feel like Winter has arrived!!

Are you one of those people that looks forward to breaking out your sweaters and scarves the second the temperature goes below 55 degrees? Or maybe you’re the type to wear your leather jacket consistently until it’s officially freezing out? Either way, we have some excellent tips for how you can do a Summer-to-Winter Seasonal Wardrobe Swap!

Seasonal Swaps can help you feel like you have a whole new wardrobe twice a year, where you get to pull out certain statement pieces and fall in love with them all over again!

If you live in a small space or don’t have a lot of storage, seasonal swaps may be a lifesaver to your home organization (and your sanity!). They help maximize your accessible storage by keeping only what you will be actively using at an arm’s reach. Even if you have the space to accommodate your full wardrobe, you may still want to consider a seasonal swap!

Today, we’re going to share the steps we take to do a seasonal swap from winter to summer! At the end of this blog, we’ll share an easy-to-follow guide we’ve created to help take you through these steps so that you can have a smooth transition from your winter to summer wardrobes!

5 Steps for a Seamless Seasonal Swap

1. Pull out and sort everything

This includes clothes, shoes, hats, bags, and other accessories. You want to sort your items into piles based on categories (long-sleeve, short-sleeve, shorts, pants, Sweater dresses, summer dresses, etc.). It can be a bit of a shock to see just how much you own. It’s hard to tell how many items we have until they’re all sitting out in clear view. This might help you realize how many items you just don’t wear anymore (or may not need) anymore. It can be a bit overwhelming, but this is also the most time-consuming part, we promise!

2. Edit each pile/category

Editing is the part of the process where you will probably make most of your decisions. You’ll not only decide what is staying in your closet and what is going into seasonal storage, but you also may decide what you want to keep and what you might want to donate! We recommend having a few garbage bags handy - one for garbage and one for donations!

3. Return Fall/Winter items to your closet

Put all your items that are staying for the current season back into your dresser drawers and closet. Make sure you utilize any “prime real estate” for these current season items that you know you will use frequently. “Prime Real Estate” is our Swoon Code for any drawer, shelf, or clothing rod that is within your arm's reach. You want your everyday items to be placed in areas that make it easy to grab the things you will use most often!

4. Do a final sweep of your off-season items

I recommend going back through your off-season items to be sure you want to keep what’s left. You won’t be seeing most of these items for 7+ months and you should absolutely LOVE them before storing them (especially if you are paying for a storage unit somewhere!). If you have any doubts about an item, like even an inkling, donate it and move on. We promise you won’t ever look back!

5. Store out-of-season categories

Once you know for sure what you will be keeping and what you will be donating, it’s time to find a space to store these things. Keep these items in harder-to-reach places like under the bed, at the top of your closet, in the basement or garage, or even in an extra storage closet or unit. We also recommend placing off-season clothes in weather-tight bins to make sure your things stay safe and protected.

The start of a new season can be an exciting time. It can feel like a fresh start for so many of us and having seasonal wardrobes can help make you feel like you have an entirely new wardrobe for the new season! It can also help tremendously if you are tight on space in your dressers or closets. We want to help you make the most of your space for what you will be actively using and wearing. That’s why we’ve created this downloadable guide to help you follow these tips step-by-step.
